Suffolk Police: Shannan Gilbert May Not Have Been Murdered OAK BEACH — Suffolk County Police are growing closer to finding out what happened to Shannan Gilbert, the New Jersey woman who worked as a prostitute and disappeared in 2010. Potentially key pieces of evidence were found Wednesday, including a pocket book and some clothes that may have belonged to Gilbert. The police are theorizing that Gilbert was not actually murdered, but died after wandering into an area of swampy marshland. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said he believed searchers are growing closer to finding her remains, and will continue the search throughout the week.
